Italy is the longest of our European runs and the one that rewards planning most — driver hours, Alpine passes and old-town access all in one job. It’s not a route to rush, which is exactly why it pays to move it with a team that treats the distance as a plan rather than a hope.
Who moves UK to Italy
A smaller, more deliberate crowd than France or Spain. People taking a post in Milan or Rome. Couples doing up a place in Tuscany or Piedmont. The occasional Italian family who put down years in Britain heading home. Fewer spur-of-the-moment moves, more considered ones — and often more that’s fragile and treasured, which is where careful packing earns its keep.
The route
From the UK to the Channel — the M20 to Dover or the Eurotunnel, then south through France to the Alps — then the long drive south through France to the Alps. We come in through the Mont Blanc or Fréjus tunnel depending on destination and conditions, then down into Lombardy & Milan or Tuscany, or further to Lazio & Rome, Piedmont, the Italian Lakes. It’s planned around driver rest and the reality that the last stretch into a hill town is often the hardest bit of the trip.
Customs and paperwork
The framework is the same post-Brexit set as the other routes — inventory, transit declaration for the goods crossing the EU, and transfer-of-residence relief for a permanent move where the conditions are met. Italy layers its own admin habits on top, with the codice fiscale threading through much of it. We prepare the customs documents with you and handle the border side; where an Italian requirement sits outside our remit, we say so plainly so it’s dealt with in good time.
Why Italy
Nobody moves to Italy by accident — it’s chosen, for the food and the light and the particular corner someone fell for years ago. Our job is the practical half: a UK houseful arriving safely on a Tuscan lane, listed and placed. Fancy a shorter first hop? Italy is a long way — is a part-load worth it?
Often, yes. It’s our longest European route, so if you’re moving less than a full house, sharing the vehicle with another consignment heading the same way makes real sense — and can be quicker to arrange than waiting to fill a dedicated load. A whole home with fixed dates usually wants its own load. The quote lays out both.
Do I need an Italian tax code before I move?
A codice fiscale threads through a lot of Italian admin — tenancies, utilities, the residency steps — and it can touch the customs paperwork. We don’t issue it, but we’ll flag where it fits so it’s in hand rather than a surprise at the far end.
Can you reach the hill towns and lakes?
We do. The Italian Lakes and the Tuscan hill towns are gorgeous and awkward in equal measure — narrow approaches, restricted-traffic zones in the old centres, and the odd final stretch a big lorry can’t take. We plan the last mile at the survey and shuttle where we must.
